Under the Official Information Act 1982, government agencies must respond within 20 working days. Key points:
- Extensions: Agencies may extend by a further 20 working days if the request is large or complex
- Refusals: Must cite specific grounds under s.6 (conclusive) or s.9 (good reason to withhold)
- Complaints: Can be made to the Ombudsman if response is delayed or information is refused
- Charges: Agencies may charge for large requests; must advise in advance
